Campus Compost STEM Grant and High Tunnel

Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa and Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa collaborated to provide projects on the Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus with the Boys & Girls Club through a Service-Learning (STEM) grant. The projects included a camp for Club members called Extreme 180 Camp, which focuses on childhood obesity and aims to help youth make healthy choices; and the "Seed to Spoon" program teaching families about sustainable agriculture and how to incorporate it into daily life.

The agencies on the Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus also partnered with Iowa Western Community College to build a high tunnel growing structure on the Lakin Campus. The service learning plan involves the construction, agriculture, culinary and sustainability departments of IWCC. The produce from the garden is used to supplement the kitchens at the Boys & Girls Club and MICAH House as well as an education instrument for all campus clients, staff and volunteers to learn sustainability and healthy eating habits. Additional produce is provided to clients at Heartland Homes and through the pantry at The Salvation Army. Volunteers are needed to help with composting, watering, weeding and caring for the high tunnel plants. Source: 2010 "Executive Summary", Iowa Western Community College, STEM Grant
